The Central Springs School District expects each student to use technology in a responsible manner. Students may be able to access the Internet through their teachers. Individual student accounts may be issued to students at this time. It is a goal to allow teachers and students access to the rich opportunities on the Internet, while we protect the rights of students and parents who choose not to risk exposure to questionable material.
The amount of time available for each student may be limited by the number of available terminals and the demands for each terminal. Students are expected to follow all teacher and lab rules and abide by the following:
- Students are responsible for what happens on their computer during the time that they are assigned to a specific station.
- Keep passwords, accounts, and files private and do not access other’s passwords, accounts, or files.
- Do not vandalize hardware and/or inappropriately modify or delete software.
- Students should leave their work station exactly as they found it unless otherwise directed.
- Avoid using disks or flash drives from home without prior instructor approval.
- E-mail, chat rooms, games, ICQ, and other communication options are prohibited unless otherwise directed.
- Do not enter restricted areas of the server or otherwise change or modify network or work station operations.
The use of the network is a privilege and may be taken away for violation of board policy or regulations outlined in the Acceptable Use Policy. As a user of the Internet, students may be allowed access to other networks. Each network may have its own set of policies and procedures. It is the user's responsibility to abide by the policies and procedures of these other networks.
Students will adhere to on-line protocol:
- Respect all copyright and license agreements.
- Cite all quotes, references and sources.
- Remain on the system long enough to get needed information, then exit the system.
- Apply the same privacy, ethical and educational considerations utilized in other forms of communication.
Students should adhere to the following guidelines:
- Others may be able to read or access the mail so private messages should not be sent.
- Delete unwanted messages immediately.
- Use of objectionable language is prohibited.
- Always sign messages.
- Always acknowledge receipt of a document or file.
Restricted Material - Students will not intentionally access or download any text file or picture or engage in any conference that includes material which is obscene, libelous, indecent, vulgar, profane or lewd; advertises any product or service not permitted to minors by law; constitutes insulting or fighting words, the very expression of which injures or harasses others; or presents a clear and present likelihood that, either because of its content or the manner of distribution, it will cause a material and substantial disruption of the proper and orderly operation and discipline of the school or school activities, will cause the commission of unlawful acts or the violation of lawful school regulations.
Unauthorized Costs - If a student gains access to any service via the Internet which has a cost involved or if a student incurs other types of costs, the student accessing such a service will be responsible for those costs.
Students who access restricted items on the Internet are subject to the following consequences:
- First Violation - A verbal and written "Warning" notice will be issued to the student. The student may lose Internet access for a period of 28 days at the discretion of the supervising teacher. A copy of the notice will be mailed to the student's parent and a copy provided to the building principal.
- Second Violation - A verbal and written "Second Violation" notice will be issued to the student. A copy of the notice will be sent to the student's parent and a copy provided to the building principal. The student will forfeit all Internet privileges for a minimum period of 90 days.
- Third Violation - A verbal and written "Third Violation" notice will be issued to the student. A copy of the notice will be sent to the student's parent and a copy provided to the building principal. The student will forfeit all Internet privileges for one year.
ACADEMIC HONESTY
Students are expected to do their own schoolwork, and cheating is not tolerated. Examples of cheating include but are not limited to:
- Obtaining or accepting a copy of a quiz, test or assignment prior to the actual event.
- Copying another student’s work or providing answers to another student.
- Representing another student’s work or material obtained from a book, the Internet, or other sources as your own.
- Using notes or other resources during a “closed book” test, quiz, or other assignment.
- Any other action intended to obtain credit for work that is not your own.
- Cheating is dishonest and prevents learning from taking place. Discipline may include the loss of credit for the quiz, test or assignment and/or class credit for the grading period as well as use of the media center or computer.
